Cette étude analyse l'histoire longue des populations et de la nature en Amazonie brésilienne pour montrer que la vision occidentale d'une forêt vierge, héritée des premiers explorateurs puis des scientifiques du XIXe siècle, relève d'une incompréhension de l'environnement naturel et social. Mal informés sur ce milieu, les Européens s'obstinent à y implanter des modèles de gestion inadaptés.
